The rue Mazarine is one of the choicest streets in the heart of the Left Bank’s historical district.
At the end of the street is a beautiful view of the dome of the Collège de France, where the play of light on its partially gilded form lifts it above the surrounding buildings to become a focal point. Almost perpendicular is the rue de Buci, known for its irresistible food shops and markets, which account for the area’s village atmosphere, despite its central Paris location.
For those too burdened with luscious groceries to climb the two flights of stairs, an elevator takes you to this 40 square meter apartment with its well designed, functional layout. The living/dining room area looks out onto a large, quiet, and airy courtyard full of healthy plants, impeccably cared for by the on-site gardienne (the politically correct term for the concierge we all know from old French films)
The owners worked with the interior designer, playing off their taste for pure lines in decor and solid oak or walnut furniture, adapting the design to the apartment as works progressed. When, for instance, the designer had the wall opposite the courtyard window stripped down to the underlying brick, he discovered a niche where a doorway once led to a neighboring apartment and turned it into a shallow cabinet for storage.
The bedroom has two twin beds set in four antique walnut ‘Diamond Point’ (a Louis XIII motif) cabinet doors, and is separated from the living room by oak-framed, glass-paned doors. Left open, these glass doors give a spacious feel. Closed, they allow for two sleeping areas; the leather couch in the living room is actually a top of the line, enviably comfortable sofa-bed – the best money can buy. The bathroom has a very nice shower stall with a water massage selection.
